WordPress 2.3 May Cause Plugin Compatibility Issues
The release of WordPress 2.3 is just around the corner and will include database schema changes that my cause some plugin compatibility issues. The plugins most likely to have issues are those that deal with categories.
Official Statement
Since taxonomy was going to cause backward compatibility breaks in the schema, we decided we might as well break it thoroughly and create something we liked. Thus the categories, post2cat, and link2cat tables were dropped and replaced by three new tables. Plugins that reference the old tables will break. They will need to be updated to either use API, preferably, or use SQL that references the new tables instead of the old ones.
WordPress 2.3 is still in beta and some of these issues will no doubt be solved. However, it never hurts to be aware of any upcoming issues. The WordPress community has started a plugin compatibility list where you can see which plugins are working and which ones are not.

Thanks for the heads up ahout the 2.3 plugins. With 2.2.3 just releasing last week, how soon do you think they’ll push out 2.3 for good?
Chris: WordPress 2.3 is scheduled to be final on September 24th, 2007. I haven’t heard of any delays and the 2.3 release calendar still shows the 24th.
