Average Joe Blogger Upgraded to WordPress 2.3
Fingers crossed, the transition to WordPress 2.3 is now complete. There were a few hickups (hopefully most of you didn’t notice) but overall it was a pretty smooth transition.
There may still be a few looming issues but as far as I can tell everything is working as it should. If happen to notice anything not functioning correctly please let me know. Thanks to Beau for pointing out the error caused by the Custom Query String plugin. Hopefully someone will update that plugin to be compatible with WordPress 2.3.

The transition went smooth for me too. I like the feature of being told when your plugins are out of date. Very useful.
I gotta admit that I am currently running WP 2.1 and have been afraid to upgrade since that version. I seem to recall a bunch of horror stories about upgrading to newer versions of 2.1, or to 2.2 — something about complicated installation, database incompatibility, etc.
I went to the WP site and read about 2.3, and there was nothing indicated about problems with upgrading. Does anyone know if I can upgrade directly to 2.3 from a 2.1 install?
You should be able to. I don’t see why not.
If you’re worried, try using the WordPress automatic upgrade plugin: http://techie-buzz.com/wordpress-plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade-plugin-update.html
whats the point of wordpress 2.3?
@Chris: The plugin notification is an excellent feature. It makes finding out of date plugins a breeze.
@David: Upgrading from 2.1 shouldn’t be much different. The main thing is to make sure all of your plugins will be compatible. The Wordpress Upgrade Preflight Check plugin is great for this.
The Custom Query String is no longer being developed which is a shame. It’s a nice plugin. I no longer use this plugin on my site but it would be good if someone decided to take up support of this plugin in the future.
@Dean: I’m keeping my fingers crossed that someone will pick up the development of CQS.
Are you no longer using it because it doesn’t work with 2.3 or because you’ve found a better solution?
A combination of both. My main use for CQS was to control how many articles would appear on my home page and my search results page.
I recently made changes in both these areas which mean I no longer have a use for the plugin. Upgrading to 2.3 just encouraged me to uninstall the plugin.
From a search perspective I now make use of custom Google search after reading an article from DoshDosh.
As for my home page. I recently modified my theme so that I only show an excerpt of the first article, and the remaining articles I just list the post title. So there wasn’t really a need for me to carry on using the plugin.
I was sweating (from fear) when I did it yesterday!
