5 Free Tools To Help You Find The Perfect Domain

July 21, 2007 | Web Tools

Domain names are an essential part of marketing your blog or website and can go along way toward helping you brand yourself online. A domain name should be simple and say something about your website and the service you are offering. If you are selling widgets or discussing how to hack a widget, then your domain should help clue readers to that fact. Your domain name is often the first thing a user sees and if it that doesn’t help convey what you do, they may move on to the next website.

For example, a user needs to have their widget repaired. They go to their favorite search engine, type in ‘Widget Repair’ and are presented with 2 options (for simplicity and let’s also put aside any SEO, etc.). The first one is for Tom Online (tomonline.com) and the second one is for Bob’s Widget Repair (bobswidgetrepair.com). Even though Tom may be the best and cheapest widget repairman, the user will most likely pass over Tom’s website and go straight for Bob’s because his domain name conveys that he does widget repair. The user may be satisfied enough with what Bob has to offer, end his search and never realize that he could have gotten better service at Tom’s.

So now that we all realize that a domain name is important, how do we go about finding one that is useful? Aren’t all of the good ones taken? It may seem like there are no good domains left but that is usually just because you’ve run out of ideas and combinations to search for. The tools below will help make this job easier.

1. Bust A Name
“Bust a Name is a tool to help you find domains and manage them. We have combined linguistic data with a unique interface to let you quickly search through thousands of domains and see which are available.”

3. DomainsBot

This is a vote for the Most Popular plug-in, as I just found this great post thanks to your Most Popular Articles list in the sidebar.

I was aware of the paid service for picking domain names, but not these free ones. I’ll have to check these out the next time I need a domain name, and also install this plug-in on my blog. ;-)
