Text Link Ads Changes Their Link Structure

August 24, 2007 | Making Money

I received this email from Text Link Ads yesterday informing me that they were changing their affiliate links and going with a TinyURL link. Here is the email:

Nathan,

As a Text Link Ads affiliate we’re pleased to let you know that we’ve begun using tinyurl.com to shorten and secure our affiliate referral links. We encourage you to update your affiliate links using the following:

Homepage URL
http://tinyurl.com/2u2rh8

Starter Promo URL
http://tinyurl.com/2l8ynv

** Please note that our old affiliate urls will no longer work in one week so please update today. Thank you!

While some are extremely thrilled with the change, claiming it will help hide their affiliate links from both their visitors and google, others are not so happy. Why would this be a bad thing, you ask? The main reason is that not everyone cloaks their affiliate links with a redirect and now they have to update all of the links throughout their site (in one week), a large task if your site has a lot of posts.

This is one of the many reasons you should be using a redirect for your affiliate links. Then when something like this happens all you need to do is update one file and your done. Check out my post on Easy and FREE Ways To Cloak Your Affiliate Links for tips on how you can do this.

If you have a Text Link Ads account be sure to update your links ASAP before they stop working. If you don’t already have a Text Link Ads account you can get 15% off (life of order) on all NEW orders for the rest of August just by entering the code “august” or take advantage of the $100 worth of free text links for new accounts.

You are 100% correct in suggesting bloggers who are affiliates use a redirect to send surfers to their affiliate websites.

It makes this change from TLA easier to swallow, plus it helps keep those nasty URLS with parameters from showing up at the bottom of a reader’s browser.

We basically have no control over the affiliate links, so it only makes sense to use redirects. It gives us back the control.

    Nathan,
Great points. I don’t use many affiliate links, but this is something I should consider for the ones I do use. I really don’t like the decision by TLA. I think it hurts many of their affiliates, which many not be a good idea. John Chow also had some good points on the subject.
