10 Sources For Blogging Inspiration

August 8, 2007 | Blogging Tips

Writing content for a blog can be tough work and if you run out of ideas, it can be down right impossible. The good news is that there are tons of ideas and topics to write about if you just know where to look. Here is a list of 10 sources to get your blogging inspiration going.

1. Reader Comments
Reader comments are one of the best places to find ideas to write about. Readers will often ask questions and touch on topics that they are interested in. Pay attention to these questions and ask yourself if the question would be better answered in detailed post rather than a 100 or less word reply in the comments.

2. Other Blogs
Other blogs and websites are a great place to find ideas, especially if they are in your niche. They allow you to see what readers in your niche are interested in that you might not have talked about. Use those ideas as a starting point to give your opinion and point of view.

Also, pay attention to their readers comments. If that blog is in your niche, chances are your readers will also be interested in any questions or topics brought up by their readers. And if you act quickly you could post a link in their comments to your post and gain a few readers.

3. Forums
Forums are a breading ground of questions and problems. Most people use forums because they have a question they want to ask a large niche user base. This is a perfect opportunity to pick up a few ideas and questions you could help answer in a post.

4. Hot Topics in Your Industry
Stay on top of what is happening in your niche or industry. If you are one of the first to write about something new you may become the go to source for that information.

5. Social Bookmarking Sites and Blog Directories
Take a look at what people are bookmarking and sharing with others. You may spark an idea or find something you can expand upon and share your own thoughts about.

6. Keywords
Use services such as Google Alerts and get notification of news, events, etc. that relate to your specified keywords. Again, if you are one of the first to write about a specific event or topic you may be able to gain some new readers or even become the go to source for that information.

7. World and Local News
Depending upon your blog and niche you may find ideas to write about from world and local news. Think about how you can expand, clarify and add your thoughts to the topic.

8. Books and Magazines
There are books on just about every subject known to man. These can be a great source for finding topics to expand upon. And if your lucky enough to have a magazine devoted to your niche it might be a good idea to either subscribe or pick up a copy every now and then.

9. Everyday Life
A lot of problems and topics arise just from the day to day of everyday life. Think about how you could possibly turn some of these in to interesting topics for your blog. Real world experience can be a huge plus with readers.

10. Conversations
What do you talk about with friends, family and co-workers? Can you relate any of these topics to your blog?

Summary
The most important thing to remember is that topic ideas are all around us and can be easy to find if we just keep a lookout for them. Make a conscious effort to keep an eye open for these ideas and if it helps, carry a small notebook with you and jot down those ideas so you won’t forget them later.

Good tips. Sometimes, too, it’s important not to try too hard to find something to write about. Some of my most popular posts (so far) have been ones where I wasn’t looking for something to blog about, but an idea came up.

Occasionally it is easier to think of something when you’re not actively trying to think of something.

Agreed. A lot of times I will be doing something completely unrelated to this blog or blogging in general and ideas will start popping into my head.

Those are the times when it’s nice to have a pen and paper close by. I know I’ve already forgotten more ideas than I’ve remembered.

Good list. One that I would add is from old posts. Sometimes it works to go back through some old posts, pick out a small part of a previous article and expand on it.
