When is the Right Time to Trash a Post

September 23, 2007 | Blogging Basics

Trash CanToday I was looking though my post and idea drafts and realized that I had quite a few posts that were partially written but never finished. Some of these drafts were nothing more than a title, while others were varying degrees of finished.

As I was reading through some of them, I kept asking myself if I felt these topics were still interesting, whether I would ever finish them or if I should just trash them. A few of them were easy to throw away, as they were only partial ideas that were never fully developed and were somewhat out dated. However, the drafts I’m having the hardest time deciding on are the ones that are over half finished but are slightly off topic, no longer relevant or I have just lost interest in.

It’s possible I’m just being over critical of these partially written posts, but I’ve come back to a few of them several times and just can’t find the motivation to finish them. So my question is when is the right time to just trash a post and forget about it? How long do you hang on to partially written posts? Do you have a set of criteria you use?

I have a few drafts written months ago that I do not plan to continue too. I think it’s best to just finish up the post and publish it. It may still be useful to some people. However, if you have completely lost interest or do not agree on the points in the post, it’s best to just dump it. I will most probably delete my drafts.

I think after about a month of having those types of posts sit in the draft bin I start to reevaluate whether it is worth it to resurrect them.

If I find that the information is outdated I trash them immediately. If they have a common theme that I want to portray I try to apply it to another new topic within the genre.
