Choosing a Topic For Your Blog
Choosing the right topic for your blog is arguably one the most important steps in starting a blog. It can determine whether your blog will succeed or fall flat on it’s face. If you want to get started in blogging this should be your first step.
There are many factors that you should consider before deciding on a topic including interest, expertise, popularity, competition, and monetization. The most important, however, is your passion and interest in the topic.
In order for your blog to be successful you need to have a passion and interest in what you are writing about. And while at least little knowledge or expertise in your topic can be invaluable, ultimately, I don’t think a lack of expertise is a deal breaker.
Take for example this blog. While I wouldn’t consider myself a complete novice in the area of blogging, I’m by no means an expert, in any aspect. But I am truly interested in the subject and willing to do what it takes to learn and implement everything I can. It’s this drive and determination that I believe will help make this blog successful. If you have the same passion for your topic then you’ve conquered, in my opinion, the most important step.
Still not sure if you have enough interest to write on your topic for the long haul? Grab a piece of paper (or open a text editor) and start listing post ideas for you topic off the top of your head. Once you’ve listed those ideas open up Google (or your search engine of choice) and do a quick search for your topic. Browse through the results and jot down any new ideas you get.
This exercise should give you a good idea of how easy it will be for you to come up with ideas to post about and whether or not you can write on this topic for the long run. Plus, if you decide to start blogging on this topic you’ve already got a sizable list of topic ideas to get you started.
